All in Visiting Hours
This was my first ever visit to Buskfest, although the street-music festival is now in its 12th year, and it was clear to see from the outset why it has been going from strength to strength for so long.
On Saturday 10 January the R-Space Gallery in Lisburn launched their latest exhibition, Colliding Forms. A collaborative project between ceramic artist Sandra Robinson and print artist Helen Lavery, the work marries the 2-D and the 3-D, with images printed on to ceramic pieces. The artists, both currently resident at the Spectrum Centre on Belfast's Shankill Road, met in university and have wanted to work together for a number of years. This project was not only a fusion of artistic media, but a research-based study in combining historical techniques - such as traditional etching processes - with modern methods, including digital techniques.
Last Friday night saw Lisburn's R-Space Gallery playing host to a low-down, dirty, rock n' roll razzmatazz! Up-and-coming events organisers Extravaga once again pulled off a fun and imaginative little night in the heart of my home city, with a vintage-and-handmade market, a fortune teller, hot food and some good old blues and rock n' roll to round it all off.
I can't believe we're already halfway through August Craft Month - the biggest one ever in fact, with Craft NI curating over 150 events celebrating Northern Ireland craftmanship. I attended the launch of CraftBomb in the Ulster Hall last Tuesday, an exhibition showcasing the best of the handmade decorations that adorned the streets of Northern Ireland during Voluntary Arts Week in May.
After featuring this innovative art project on the PQ last year, I fell in love with it and vowed to see it in the flesh if it returned for a second year. Thankfully it has, and the response from artists has been even bigger and better than in 2013.
Another new regular feature! Visiting Hours is the Quill's 'out and about' feature - be it a review of a gig or show, coverage of a festival or fair, or my thoughts on an exhibition, event or outlet, this is where you'll find it. I spent my first Visiting Hour doing something I have been meaning to do for a very long time - popping into ReFound!
