For those of you who actually remember the first (and last) Magazine of the Month, it has indeed been seven months since I launched my new so-called ‘monthly’ feature.
Sorry to leave you waiting so long for the second installment, but I can assure you MotM is back to stay, and what better way to re-launch the series than with a true classic – Homes & Antiques.
I’m also delighted to announce that the publishers of Homes & Antiques are offering one lucky Quill reader the chance to win a year’s subscription to the magazine. Details of how to enter the competition are at the end of the post.
The magazine counterpart of the famous and beloved Sunday night stalwart The Antiques Roadshow, you’d be forgiven for thinking you need to be an antiques enthusiast to enjoy it.
Homes & Antiques has an obvious focus, but – a bit like this very blog – its remit is slightly wider than its name suggests.
It’s very cleverly pitched, retaining its loyal readers, but also appealing to a younger audience and those who aren’t necessarily avid ‘antiquers’.
Its strapline declares areas of interest as “Vintage, Antiques, Heritage, Interiors, Collections”.
They have coined a phrase and given birth to a rather sweet concept: ‘vintiquing’. Tapping in to the continuing popularity of all things vintage, they are opening the magazine up to those who enjoy jumble sales, second hand shops and retro kitsch while remaining relevant to those who know the difference between majolica and maiolica.
So let’s have a look inside the April 2013 issue, currently on sale and available until the end of the month.
News pages are colourful and well laid out, with an interesting mix of topics – something for everyone.
I loved this pretty Easter home decor craft feature.
My favourites were the eggshell candles – so cute and really simple to make.
The teal colour palette really appealed to me – I have seen these shades used beautifully in fashion and interiors recently.
Since working for an interiors magazine, I have been a bit of a house nerd, so I love real-home features. H & A had a really great mix of styles, from Sheila’s Sidmouth property packed with antiques…
To Hannah Baud’s vivid and vibrant Oxfordshire farmhouse.
As mentioned, enjoyable, well-written features for those who are not avid antique collectors…

I particularly enjoyed the feature on Arts and Crafts books. Admittedly I first thought these would be instructional books on sewing or painting, but in fact the piece referred to the Arts and Crafts movement pioneered by William Morris in the 1800s. D’oh…
This was a lovely article about the artist-designed books of the period and a guide to seeking out affordable but worthwhile investments.
I had no idea Dante Gabriel Rossetti, a pre-Raphaelite painter (I’m no art historian, but I do love the work of the pre-Raphaelite brotherhood), had also produced book covers.
