What’s On This Week 7 – 13 April 2014

Another packed week of events in Northern Ireland, with magic shows, theatre performances, art workshops, music fundraisers and atmospheric film screenings.

Monday 7 April

Newtownabbey

Association of Ulster Drama Festival – Theatre at the Mill, 7 – 12 April

Six amateur drama groups will each stage a play on one night of the festival, competing for the Grand Opera House Premiere Award. Adjudicated by Chris Jaegar GODA, the plays are an eclectic selection, including Bedroom Farce by Alan Ayckbourne and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf by Edward Albee. Tickets are £12 (£10 conc.) per play or £60 (£50 conc.) for a festival ticket and can be bought here.

Tuesday 8 April

Lisburn

Me and My Girl – The Island Arts Centre, 7.30 – 10.30pm

Lisnagarvey Operatic Society present this classic musical set in 1930s London. A host of hilarious characters and one-liners will entertain the audience, as well as much-loved musical numbers such as Lambeth Walk, The Sun Has Got His Hat On and Leaning on a Lamp Post. Tickets are £12 Tues, Wed and Thur and £14 Fri and Sat and can be booked here.

Wednesday 9 April

Belfast

Midweek Magic Club – The Black Box, 7.30pm

Brought to you by Seedhead Arts and The Black Box, Midweek Magic shows present four local magicians, each trying out new and innovative material. In between performances, they show off their skills with a bit of close up magic for you around the tables. Tickets are £4, available here.

Seamus Heaney: A Conference and Commemoration – 10 – 13 April, Various times/locations

The Seamus Heaney Centre for Poetry at Queen’s University Belfast is hosting an international conference to honour the late poet. It coincides with his 75th birthday on April 13 and also the tenth anniversary of the Centre’s opening and is intended as a celebration of his work and discussion of his contribution to literature and his legacy. Highlights include public poetry readings at the Ulster Hall and Lyric Theatre, and poetry, music and conference dinners in QUB’s Riddel Hall and City Hall. Panel discussions and lectures cover themes such as ‘The Politics and Poetics of Reconciliation’ and ‘Heaney the Teacher’.

Antrim

CAUSE art workshop – JolieArt shop @ Junction One, 7 – 9pm

This event is for families, partners or friends who are supporting a loved one who has experienced serious mental illness. Dinner and drinks will be provided during the art workshop. Just come along, grab a canvas, pick up a paint brush and have a great time! Everything needed to create your own masterpiece is provided for you. This event is free to attend, however booking is still essential as spaces are limited. Songs For Syria – The Empire Music Hall, 7.30pm – late 

The devastating impact of civil war in Syria has inspired a group of local musicians to put on a night of music to raise funds and awareness. Performing on the night are Gareth Dunlop, Farriers, Anthony Toner, Master & Dog and Rory Nellis. Tickets for this spectacular local line up are £5 in advance or £6 on the door, with all proceeds going to The Disasters Emergency Committee. Tickets are available from Ticketmaster.  If you can’t make it on the night, you can donate to the cause here or text SFS £2 (or any amount up to £10) to 70070.

Saturday 12 April

Belfast

Screening of The Shawshank Redemption – Crumlin Road Gaol, doors open 7pm

An atmospheric setting for a screening of this much-loved film, which tells the tale of Andy Dufresne, a banker convicted for a double murder and sent to Shawshank State Prison in Maine. This is a fundraiser for Bredagh GAC, tickets are £10 (including a complimentary drink) and can be purchased here.
